Non-verbal communication

Updated July 2020

Objective:

Students will understand that both verbal and non-verbal cues contribute meaning in language.

Lesson

  1. Hand out playing cards.  Students have to find others with the same suit as their card – diamonds, hearts, spades or clubs – without talking.  Discuss how they found each other.
  2. Lead a classroom discussion how in English Canada we (generally) give hugs to our family and friends and in French Canada we (generally) do the two cheek “kiss kiss.’  (This is a topic is covered in the lesson “Je dis bonjour.” The point I am trying to teach in non-verbal communication is different in different cultures).
  3.  Role-play non-verbal communication:Non-verbal communication Game Cards
  4. Play the First Nation’s non-verbal game Slahal.
